You do have a risk of running into something that can harm your silver cord, but once you're through the portal you're home free. What all this boils down to is if you know the location of a portal to the Nine Hells and you need to go to the Nine Hells to take out a demon prince that might just kill you in your attempt, the safest way to do it is through Astral Projection. If the silver cord is cut your normal body and your astral body die.ģ) If you take your astral body through a portal to one of the Outer Planes you're safe (I guess unless Githyanki invade that Plane) as nothing native to a plane other than the Astral Plane can harm your silver cord. If it is destroyed it disappears and you go back into your normal body.Ģ) While on the Astral Plane a small handful of things can damage your silver cord. It can be attacked and take damage and all that stuff.

If you had to deal with millennia of powerful arch-wizards using temp bodies to fuck up your shit, you'd probably figure out how to harm a silver cord too.ġ) You have an astral-projection body. The Githyanki developed the technique to make silver swords because they hate deities (and their emissaries), which use the Astral Plane as a rule, and because they wanted total control of their stomping grounds. Sure Plane Shift can get a party to where it wants to go - how about an army? As the Githyanki no doubt discovered because they love it there - you also don't age, don't need food, and can travel in any direction via thought. Yes you can Plane Shift a party to wherever you need to go, but then you have no safety net - you're there physically, if you die (via the 1001+ ways anyone can die), you're dead.Īlso, the "point" to the Astral Plane is it is a way to traverse between planes that anyone can use to get anywhere, if they find a portal or are someone (or know someone) who can cast Astral Projection. Maybe just don't leave your castle at all then, if you're so concerned about stuff that might kill you that you'll ignore nigh-invulnerability. You're telling me you wouldn't jump at the chance to waltz into other worlds completely uncaring whether your temp-body lived or died? Welp then you're either lying or ridiculously paranoid. And the only things that could permanently kill you were really weird niche stuff like silver swords or an astral dreadnought. Imagine if you were a high level caster and figured out how to use the Astral Plane to make a fake body and fake magic items to go anywhere you want with no repercussions whatsoever besides having to cast the spell again. To repeat what was said earlier, this is why the githyanki's silver swords are so feared. I'd rather be at risk of taking damage normally with Plane Shift then constantly at risk of insta-death with Astral Projection.
